The evolution of selective autophagy as a mechanism of oxidative stress response.Joshua Ratliffe, Tetsushi Kataura, Elsje G. Otten & Viktor I. Korolchuk - 2023 - Bioessays 45 (11):2300076.
Ageing is associated with a decline in autophagy and elevated reactive oxygen species (ROS), which can breach the capacity of antioxidant systems. Resulting oxidative stress can cause further cellular damage, including DNA breaks and protein misfolding. This poses a challenge for longevous organisms, including humans. In this review, we hypothesise that in the course of human evolution selective autophagy receptors (SARs) acquired the ability to sense and respond to localised oxidative stress. We posit that in the vicinity of protein aggregates (...)

The use of digital twins in healthcare: socio-ethical benefits and socio-ethical risks.Marc-Jeroen Bogaardt, Elsje Oosterkamp, Mireille van Hilten & Eugen Octav Popa - 2021 - Life Sciences, Society and Policy 17 (1):1-25.
Anticipating the ethical impact of emerging technologies is an essential part of responsible innovation. One such emergent technology is the digital twin which we define here as a living replica of a physical system (human or non-human). A digital twin combines various emerging technologies such as AI, Internet of Things, big data and robotics, each component bringing its own socio-ethical issues to the resulting artefacts. The question thus arises which of these socio-ethical themes surface in the process and how they (...)

    What’s the Deal? Women’s Evidence and Gendered Negotiations.Elsje Bonthuys - 2019 - Feminist Legal Studies 27 (1):7-31.
South African law has traditionally denied property sharing rights to people in non-marital intimate partnerships, but a series of new cases has created the possibility of enforcing universal partnership contracts to claim a share in partnership property. However, evidential biases within these progressive cases reflect a historical disdain for women’s contributions to relationships and a widespread reluctance to believe women’s testimony about the existence of agreements to share. These biases bear strong resemblances to the gender stereotypes which have been the (...)

    Women’s Sexuality in the South African Constitutional Court: Jordan v. S. 2002 SA 642 also reported as 2002 BCLR 1117.Elsje Bonthuys - 2006 - Feminist Legal Studies 14 (3):391-406.
In 2002 the constitutionality of the Sexual Offences Act, which criminalizes the behaviour of sex workers but fails to punish their clients, was at issue in the South African Constitutional Court. The majority of the Court held that the legislation does not constitute indirect discrimination on the basis of gender. The minority judgment found indirect gender discrimination, but held that the legislation did not infringe upon sex workers’ rights to dignity and privacy. This note argues that the reasoning in both (...)

Gender and Race in South African Judicial Appointments.Elsje Bonthuys - 2015 - Feminist Legal Studies 23 (2):127-148.
Although the obligation to appoint women as judges originates from the constitutional injunction to consider “the need for the judiciary to reflect broadly the racial and gender composition of South Africa,” gender transformation has lagged behind racial transformation of the bench. During the past four years, however, the lack of women appointees has become a more contested issue. This paper investigates the relationship between gender transformation and racial transformation of the judiciary in public debates around the judiciary. Despite the universally (...)

Putting Gender into the Definition of Rape or Taking it Out?: Masiya v Director of Public Prosecutions and Others, 2007 BCLR 827.Elsje Bonthuys - 2008 - Feminist Legal Studies 16 (2):249-260.
The main issue in the Masiya judgment was whether the current South African definition of rape—namely non-consensual penetration of a vagina by a penis—should be extended to include anal penetration of both female and male victims. The majority of the Constitutional Court held that anal penetration of female victims should constitute rape, but declined to offer similar protection to male victims. This note argues that this judgment reverts to and reinforces patriarchal stereotypes and dichotomies and that it misunderstands, in a (...)

  12. The Ethical Mutual Fund Performance Debate: New Evidence from Canada.Rob Bauer, Jeroen Derwall & Rogér Otten - 2007 - Journal of Business Ethics 70 (2):111-124.
Although the academic interest in ethical mutual fund performance has developed steadily, the evidence to date is mainly sample-specific. To tackle this critique, new research should extend to unexplored countries. Using this as a motivation, we examine the performance and risk sensitivities of Canadian ethical mutual funds vis-à-vis their conventional peers. In order to overcome the methodological deficiencies most prior papers suffered from, we use performance measurement approaches in the spirit of Carhart (1997, Journal of Finance 52(1): 57–82) and Ferson (...)

On knowing God: interdisciplinary theological perspectives.Jacobus Kok, Martin Webber & Jeremy Otten (eds.) - 2022 - Piscataway, NJ, USA: Gorgias Press LLC.
This book explores the concept of Knowing God and the Knowability of God from an interdisciplinary theological perspective. Approaching the issue from the perspectives of their respective theological disciplines, contributors reflect on what it means to know God, how people of faith have sought to know God in the past, and indeed whether, and to what extent, such knowledge is even possible.

Proportions of the jaw mechanism of cichlid fishes changes and their meaning.E. Otten - 1985 - Acta Biotheoretica 34 (2-4):207-217.
The jaw mechanism of cichlid fishes is an intricate apparatus with complex force transmission from muscles to environment. The proportions of this apparatus change considerably during growth mainly due to scale effects. In adult fishes, the proportions differ, corresponding with the type of preferred food. In such a complex mechanism, it is very hard to gain insight into the functional meaning of the differences in proportions, unless a biomechanical model is constructed, describing kinematics and force equilibria of the apparatus.Such a (...)

In The Shadow Of The Divine: Negative Theology And Negative Anthropology In Augustine, Pseudo‐Dionysius And Eriugena.Willemien Otten - 1999 - Heythrop Journal 40 (4):438–455.
This article takes its starting‐point in the current resurgence of interest in negative theology. Being especially prevalent among postmodern thinkers, this interest coincides with a strong conviction concerning the absence of the divine. In the postmodern context the interest in negative theology leads quite naturally into a debate on negative anthropology, as humanity's increasing awareness of its own finitude appears to reflect a similar break with the metaphysics of being. To analyze the tradition of negative theology, the article goes back to (...)

Reviving the Logical Connection Argument.James Otten - 1977 - Canadian Journal of Philosophy 7 (4):725-743.
The logical connection argument claims that since the relation between a want and the supposedly resultant action is " logical " in nature, Whereas the relation between any cause and its effect must be contingent in nature, A want therefore cannot be the cause of an action. I consider four classical formulations of the lca, And review various objections that have been brought against them. Then I present my own formulation of the lca, Which is immune to such objections. I (...)

Ethicists differ considerably in their reasons for using empirical data. This paper presents a brief overview of four traditional approaches to the use of empirical data: “the prescriptive applied ethicists,” “the theorists,” “the critical applied ethicists,” and “the particularists.” The main aim of this paper is to introduce a fifth approach of more recent date (i.e. “integrated empirical ethics”) and to offer some methodological directives for research in integrated empirical ethics. All five approaches are presented in a table for heuristic (...)

This book presents a study of twelfth-century humanism seen as an all-embracing discourse in which the human and the divine interact on equal terms. The book focuses on a number of twelfth-century intellectuals, especially Thierry of Chartres, Peter Abelard, William of Conches, Bernard Silvestris, and Alan of Lille. Defining characteristic of their texts is the fact that God, nature and humanity enter into a trialogue of sorts involving many disparate subjects and aiming to bring out the archetypal relatedness of all (...)
